miss no good

29Nov09

Finally finished this Taiwanese drama called Miss No Good.  It’s about a cheerful girl named Jiang Xiao Hua who is an accessories store owner with bad style.  When an old schoolmate, Jia Si Le comes back from Japan wanting to date her, she convinces style expert, the hard to please Tang Men to give her a makeover.  It stars Rainie Yang, Dean Fujioka and Will Pan.

I remember watching her in Devil Beside You with Mike He, which was pretty decent.  Both Rainie Yang and Will Pan have successful musical careers aside from their acting.

I haven’t watched a Taiwanese drama in awhile because I got annoyed after watching It Started With A Kiss.  The female lead’s character played by Ariel Lin was such a doormat that I got pissed off and didn’t even finish the series.

I thought this drama was really cute because the characters were likable and didn’t find the story too unbelievable (at least for a drama).  The secondary characters such as Tang Men’s assistant and Xiao Hua’s friends and family brought a light-hearted touch and comedic moments to the series.  Even though, Xiao Hua gets a makeover, her personality stays the same and changes Tang Men’s heart and life.

I’m so sad that they’re not selling the black eyelash adhesive at London Drugs or Shoppers anymore >.< but my mom went shopping in the States on Black Friday and grabbed one from a drugstore in Seattle for me! I’m going to have to stock up the next time I go to the States.

Forever 21 has just launched another collection called Boutique by Forever 21.  The line is “vintage inspired, feminine and romantic” but still casual.

And they just launched a cosmetics line called Love and Beauty, which makes it the first beauty line for a fast fashion brand on U.S. soil according to WWD. The line can be found on forever21.com along with their new clothing collection.

Marchesa is now making handbags.  They showed their handbags with their collection for spring 2010.  Rihanna was spotted wearing a  black and white laser cut out Marchesa gown at the 2009 American Music Awards.

A list of ten fashion catchphrases.  Of course, one from Rachel Zoe is on the list.  I get the idea of smizing, but it just sounds weird to me.

Somehow, someone at Ungaro still thinks having Lindsay Lohan, “hot mess”, around is a good idea.   Even though, her collection was widely derided in the industry.

Check out itlooksgoodtome.  It’s a blog by a textile designer for the fashion industry.  It’s a collection of things she likes and all the illustrations are done by her.  She’s just finished a guest blog on luckymag.com.

It’s another photoshop fiasco.  Demi Moore for V Magazine in gold Balmain, and apparently part of her hip has been shaved down.  She’s insisting the photos have been barely retouched and she’s just skinny.  Yeah, just like she hasn’t had any “work” done.

Actress, Michelle Trachtenberg is the latest to join the ranks of “celebrity designers” with a jewelry collection for Coach’s Poppy line.

The Victoria’s Secret fashion show won’t be aired for a couple days til December 1st but here’s a little preview.

Last but not least, December’s edition of British Vogue features a collection of stories on the 7 Wonders of Fashion from various contributors.  Some choice items are the high heel (of course), the corset, and the pencil skirt.

In one man’s garage, he’s recreated a precise replica of a first class cabin from a Pan Am World Airways 747 in his condo in Redondo Beach, California.

Porn star, Sasha Grey stars in the new film, the Girlfriend Experience.  Here’s an interview where she talks about religion, prostitution, and her new film by Steven Soderbergh.

Magazine publishers including Time Inc. and Conde Nast plan to jointly build an online newstand for publications, kind of like an iTunes for magazines.

I know it’s not December yet but it’s coming pretty soon and I love this song.  Also, I love this show.  Whoever hasn’t watched it yet, you need to catch up.

update

25Nov09

I haven’t gotten a chance to update this as much as I’d like to.  Been busy with another job I just landed and working quite a bit.  Also, because I was working my through How I Met Your Mother, which I just finished a few days ago.  Pretty funny.  I’m sad that they’re not renewing Eastwick, though.  So busy in fact, that I haven’t talked to my best friend/good friend? (not qute sure what to call him cuz we used to be best friends before but before this year we hadn’t talked for a few years cuz of some stuff that happened), in at least a month.

Plans for Vegas in January have been finalized.  Going again but this time it’ll be with a group of 8 girls so it should be very fun.  And we will be going for 5 days, 4 nights this time.  Last time it was only 4 days and 3 nights and it was definitely not long enough.  I need more dresses and skirts, more dressy stuff for both work, the trip and holidays.  Might be ordering stuff from Asos.  I’ll try to post up pix of the stuff I get when it arrives.

My brother left for 3 months to Brazil last Friday.  Sweet.  Actually, not much of a difference whether he’s here or not, though, I think.  The family dinner we had on Thursday, the day before he left was sooooo good.   My mom grilled a bunch of steaks and my aunt made cookies for dessert.  The steak was rare, almost bleeding, just the way my family all eats it.  Way better than the Keg!

And I know Vancouver is small but it’s still a little weird that I saw this guy that was in my mandarin class a few years ago 3x in the last 2 weeks.  First, at bar none which is not weird at all cuz you always see people at the club.  Second, I went with Cindy, Sarah, and Simon to this cafe in Aberdeen and saw him there too.  And last, saw him on Sunday at this Vietnamese restaurant near my house where I went to go eat with my little sister.  Random.

I got this off Chowhound. The story is that a group of eight refused to pay an auto gratuity that was on the bill because they felt the service was so poor.  I worked in a restaurant before so I can understand why they put an auto gratuity on the bill for big parties but if the service was that bad or nonexistent, I’m all for getting them to comp something for them or give them a discount because a tip is supposed to be based on the performance of the server.

On Cakespy, is a list of pastries and desserts named after famous people.  That’s something I wouldn’t mind having named after me.

In Chelsea, New York, a more upscale, European style Mcdonalds has been introduced.  This one features flat screen tvs and free wifi.  The Chelsea restaurant is the first in the U.S. to be redesigned.

Fusing fashion and food is the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s American Fashion Cookbook.  The book features a foreword by Martha Stewart and recipes from Isaac Mizrahi, Derek Lam, Carolina Herrera and others.

And Eric Ripert, famed chef of Le Bernardin, gets freaked out by Costco on a trip with Alan Richman for GQ.

This is not going to help my addiction to fashion and sales at all.  Yesterday, Daily Candy launched their sample site, Swirl.  The site is only in beta mode and will have a hard launch on February 1.

Ebay introduces the Fashion Vault, a new space for designer sales events much like Haute Look and Rue La La.

And I just discovered Lucky Mag, the magazine about shopping and style’s website.  They just started a feature where you earn cash back while you shop called My Lucky Rewards.  You can earn up to 25% cash back at over 600 retailers.
